Carlos and Gilda Sacasas …on the Art
of Living

Artist Gilda Sacasas and husband Carlos |
Gilda, what most inspires you as an artist?
My life experiences, memories and feelings. It’s not about
one thing, it’s about many things, spirituality, painting,
creating, writing, listening to people, watching people, analyzing
absolutely everything around me, traveling to new and old places.
It all makes me light up.
Who or what has been your greatest influence or muse?
Picasso was always a major force in my life. I learned at an early
age to look at his work with the same regard that some look at Michelangelo.
Another was Modigliani, and dozens of other painters whom I admire.
Talk a little bit about your career evolution and where you
are now.
I have been a professional artist for 13 years now, and I really
can’t imagine doing or being anything else. I feel alive when
I am painting. I have exhibited at numerous museums, institutions
and in private collections throughout the world, and have been profiled
in numerous national and international publications. For the past
eight years, Carlos and I have had our own gallery, GDS Fine Arts,
in Coral Gables, Florida. As Van Gogh said: “ I am still far
from being what I want to be, but with God’s help I shall
succeed.”
Carlos, are you and Gilda big food and wine lovers?
We love all styles of cuisine, and we enjoy a fine bottle of wine
with good company. We are relatively new to wine, but with increasing
interest since Gilda has been the official artist of the Biltmore/Cellar
Club Wine Festival for the past five years.
Gilda, what is your one guilty pleasure?
Jewelry.
How About you, Carlos?
Watching my large screen TV in bed.
How do you enjoy the Biltmore and its services?
We are Cellar Club members. We absolutely love the beautiful Biltmore
architecture, refinement, and comfort. The sparkling rooms with
their feather beds and superb linens are the ultimate relaxation
experience. Breakfast by the beautiful pool is a must. We also love
the superb cuisine and wine of Palme d’Or; it is truly a memorable
experience. After dinner, a walk down to the beautiful Cellar Club
makes our day at this beautiful, historical, and prestigious hotel
the ultimate experience.
What are some of your favorite places to visit?
In South Florida, Naples. Abroad, the Amalfi Coast, and the Coastal
town of Positano, a wonderful village that basks in natural gifts:
lush flora, superb cuisine, wine, art galleries and spectacular
scenery….an artists dream! Of course, Venezia and Paris too;
everywhere you go, historical sites abound. Carlos adores Boston,
San Francisco and Barcelona, Rome, Florence, and Venezia, as well,
so rich in history and architecture.
Carlos, what is your idea of the perfect day?
Spend the day with my wife, start with a late breakfast with mimosas,
a little shopping, and a nice candle-lit dinner. I also love long
afternoon naps.
Gilda, what do you do to relax?
I create. I consider creativity a mysterious gift. I gratefully
accept it and nurture it by exposing myself to good music and being
alone with ME when I’m thinking or drawing.
If you could travel anyplace and do whatever you wanted to do
there, where would you go, and what would you do?
Gilda: I would go to Paris, visit the Louvre, sit at an outdoor
café with a glass of wine, and people-watch. C’est
la vie!
Carlos: I would go to Barcelona, take my wife to The Picasso Museum,
sit at an outdoor café, and order some tapas and vino. That’s
life!
